Description of Elbląg

Reservation of hotels in Elblag. Elblag- a town on the route of famous inclined planes of the Elblag-Ostróda channel. In the past it was a major seaport and the former Prussian settlement- Truso. In 1237, the Teutonic Knights arrived at the place and built a castle. In the 15th century the fall of the town, caused by the competition from Gdansk, began and the sliming of rivers led to a gradual elimination of sea navigation. Elblag is a big scholar and cultural centre although in 1945 it was destroyed in 90%. Only now, the reconstruction of the old tenements is being concluded. The process is taking place slowly, yet with great care and accuracy with the use of rich iconographic records. The Old Town is becoming a chic, luxurious quarter with galleries, shops, restaurants and cafes. The huge St Nicolas' Church dating back to the 13th century with a 95-metre tower boasts precious interiors from the 14th-18th centuries. The old castle got turned into ruin. Other monuments are: the Holy Ghost's Church from the 14th century, reconstructed after its demolition during World War II, the gothic St George's Church, the remains of the town's defensive walls with Brama Targowa (the Fair Gate). After the sightseeing tour of the town, tourist can have a walk in the Bazantarnia (Pheasantry) park close to a forest in the northern suburban quarter of the town. Visitors to town can also have a walk or hike along the well-marked trails in the Elblag Hills with many ravines and rushing streams. The main tourist attraction: The Gothic St Nicolas' Church.
